Why is it Important to Get My Teeth Cleaned?

Teeth Cleaning is an important part of your overall oral health. If you want to keep your natural smile lasting as long as possible, it is important to see your dentist for a teeth cleaning every 6 months.

Preventative

We like to prevent dental problems before they happen. At your dental hygiene visit, we are able to identify if there are early signs of issues, like gingivitis, gum disease and cavities. When we are able to see the onset of these potential problems at your 6-month checkup, we can use prevention techniques to help you from having more serious mouth problems. If you visit us regularly, typically every 6 months, we are able to track any changes in your oral health. A regular check-up can save you money, time and pain in the long-term.

Regular dental visits can also help if you have issues with bad breath. Sometimes bad breath can be cured or alleviated by a professional teeth cleaning.

Don’t wait until you have tooth pain or swollen gums to see a dentist.  We like to see our patients at least every 6 months to avoid problems that can lead to a toothache.

What To Expect

When you visit Ewing Dental, you can expect to feel comfortable and safe. At your 6-month dental appointment you will get an oral exam and a teeth cleaning, and possibly oral images.

If it’s been 2 or more years since you’ve had oral x-rays done, we will request you get the images taken at this appointment. The up-to-date oral x-rays are a tool the dentist uses to help keep track of your oral health. If you have an issue in your mouth, the dentist will use the xrays to diagnose and make a most appropriate treatment plan for you.

One of our experienced dental hygienists will perform the teeth cleaning portion of the appointment. They will use specialized dental tools to remove any tartar build up from your teeth and gums. Unfortunately brushing and flossing at home is not enough to remove tartar buildup which can lead to plaque. That can lead to larger problems like gingivitis and gum disease. We want you to come in to see us every 6 months so we can remove tartar and plaque before it is detrimental to your gums and teeth. After the tartar has been removed, the dental hygienist will then polish your teeth. Then we’ll go over brushing and flossing techniques that will help keep your teeth clean until your next appointment.

After the cleaning is complete, the dentist will perform an oral cancer screening. It is a quick and easy exam of your jaws and the soft tissue in your mouth. The dentist will feel with his hands for any abnormalities that are signs of cancer. This simple step has proven to be effective in the early detection of oral cancers.

If any abnormalities or problems were found during your exam, the doctor will discuss them with you, along with his recommended course of action, or treatment plan. We’ll go over specific recommendations for you to maintain your long-term oral health and address any unique concerns you may have.

Before leaving, we’ll go over your payment options and schedule your next visit. And, of course, you’ll be leaving with a brand new toothbrush as a souvenir.
